Well, don’t get disappointed. You too can have that same clean pond if you get a water filter system. But not just any-it should be a reverse osmosis system. Whether you use tap water or well water you can be sure to run into something like metals, nitrates, phosphates, chlorine and chloramines in some cases; and these are elements that your aquatic inhabitants are not going to appreciate. But a reverse osmosis water filter system will just about remove the vast majority of all these impurities out of the water.

Tap water sources are especially known to contain nitrates and phosphates which is the main food source for algae. And algae grow rapidly in the fish ponds sticking to the walls as substratum when there is an abundance of these elements. Another notorious element that exists in tap water is copper which comes from the copper plumbing. Copper is very toxic to many invertebrates and therefore should be removed quickly to prevent any unfortunate deaths within your koi pond. The safest way to combat these impurities is therefore to use a reverse osmosis system which can remove about 98% of the impurities.  Some people even use a deionization (DI) filter to clean up anything that’s left behind to give 99.9% pure water into the ponds. This will require very little maintenance in the long run which will ultimately help save precious time and cost. And whatever fish you may have in your pond, regular water change is a must. However, a partial water change is recommended where you change only 50% of the water at a time. This is because all fishes including the gorgeous Koi varieties do not like sudden changes in their living environment like temperature and water pH.  Many experts fish keepers also believe that partial regular water changes allows the fishes to grow better and healthier as the required minerals and elements for growth are replenished through the added water while still maintaining a stable pond environment.

You don’t have to dread over maintenance issues if you have a fish pond. Koi pond maintenance can be an easy task if you know just how and when to change water and build a pond with a little foresight.
